The Philippine Informal Reading Inventory (Phil-IRI) is a classroom-based assessment tool developed by the Department of Education (DepEd) to measure and describe students' reading performance in both English and Filipino languages. Aimed at learners from Grades 3 to 6, Phil-IRI evaluates three key literacy tasks: Oral Reading, Silent Reading, and Listening Comprehension. The primary objective is to identify students' reading levels—independent, instructional, and frustration—to inform and enhance instructional strategies.

Components of Phil-IRI

The Phil-IRI assessment comprises several essential components:

  1. Manual of Administration: This manual provides comprehensive guidelines on administering the Phil-IRI assessments, recording results, and interpreting data. It serves as a crucial resource for teachers, school heads, and education supervisors to ensure standardized administration.

  2. Group Screening Test (GST): Designed for whole-class administration, the GST consists of 20-item comprehension tests tailored for each grade level. It helps identify students who may require further individualized assessment.

  3. Graded Passages: These are sets of reading passages with corresponding comprehension questions, used for individualized assessment. They help determine a student’s reading accuracy, speed, and comprehension skills.

  4. Phil-IRI Forms: Various forms are utilized for recording and summarizing student performance, aiding in data analysis and instructional planning.

Administration Guidelines

To effectively implement Phil-IRI, educators should adhere to the following guidelines:

  • Scheduling: Administer the GST within the first or second month of the school year as a pretest, and conduct a posttest between January and February. Individual assessments should follow within a month after the GST.

  • Duration: The GST typically takes approximately 30 minutes for the entire class. Individual assessments may vary in duration depending on each student’s reading abilities.

  • Administrators: Filipino subject teachers for Grades 3 to 6 and English subject teachers for Grades 4 to 6 are responsible for administering the GST. ELLN-trained teachers can conduct individual assessments. Proper training and familiarity with the manual are essential for accurate administration.

Conclucions

The Philippine Informal Reading Inventory is a vital tool in assessing and enhancing the reading abilities of Filipino students. By utilizing Phil-IRI, educators can identify students’ reading levels, tailor instruction to meet diverse needs, and contribute to the overarching goal of making every Filipino child a reader and writer at their grade level.

For comprehensive guidelines and materials, educators are encouraged to access the Phil-IRI resources available through the DepEd LRMDS portal and other educational platforms.

By integrating Phil-IRI into classroom practices, teachers play a pivotal role in fostering literacy and empowering students to achieve academic success.
